I can understand the attraction of centralising State League, but clubs have to be at the centre of any decision. They invest in their teams and players, and home matches give members and juniors an opportunity to watch their club’s best players. That connection shouldn’t be underestimated. The challenge is finding people who have played at the elite level and understand what it means to players and clubs. I suggest Mark Scatena is neither!

Regional and metropolitan clubs need genuine opportunities to influence the direction of tennis in WA. Advisory groups should be strengthened, not weakened, when difficult issues arise. Good organisations should actively encourage different opinions because that is often where better decisions come from.

This gets to the bigger issue, what does a club receive in return for affiliation? Clubs would probably accept reasonable increases more readily if there was a clear connection between what they pay and the services, competitions, marketing and development support they receive.

I like the idea of a partnership model where Tennis West benefits when clubs grow rather than simply charging according to infrastructure. If clubs increase membership and participation, both the clubs and governing body should benefit. That creates a genuine shared incentive to grow tennis.

Affiliation fees should encourage clubs and the governing body to grow together. A model based heavily on the number of courts doesn’t necessarily reflect a club’s membership, financial position or contribution to growing the sport. It would be interesting to see alternative models properly discussed with clubs.

This is exactly the sort of history that needs to be preserved. How about doing a year by year series from the 1970s through to the 1990s identifying the leading men and women, State League champions and major tournament winners? There would be some wonderful stories to rediscover

Love seeing these old names again. State League and the tournament circuit created personalities that people around WA tennis actually knew and followed. It would be fantastic if Court Talk continued publishing more results, rankings, photographs and newspaper stories from this era.

Why does competitive tennis seem to almost disappear from the pathway once players leave juniors? Tennis is supposed to be a sport for life. There should be meaningful singles and doubles tournaments for people in their 20s, 30s, 40s and beyond who still want serious open competition.

Imagine a genuine WA circuit incorporating historic championships, major regional tournaments and State League players, with points, prize money, promotion and an end of year championship. That would give adult competitive tennis an identity again and create something sponsors and spectators could actually follow.
